It all started in Paris, in the era of the 1950’s, when an otolaryngologist, Dr. Alfred Tomatis worked on a series of investigations that led him to create a machine that trains the ear to better process the information it receives. The machine was called the Electronic Ear, and it revolutionized the field of developmental disorders and other areas of the human being. This treatment administered by the Electronic Ear is called the Tomatis Method.

The Tomatis Method stimulates the two most important sensory processing systems of the human being, the vestibular and auditory system. Dr.Tomatis viewed them as a single system, not as two separate ones, where one (the vestibular) processes all the movements of the body and the other (the cochlear or auditory) the rapid oscillatory movement produced by sounds. One affects the other in their function and when one is stimulated the other one indirectly stimulates the other.

John was somehow desperate to know that his 11 year old son Skyler was intelligent and able to do well at school, if it would no be for a long obstacle.  He had a significant reading problem.  Looking for help, he traveled all the way from Moca to San Juan, to Tomatis de Puerto Rico and at first, could not believe what was told to him.  That his son reading problem was not related to the eyes, but to the ears.  They explained that the pre-reading skills were not adequate in Skyler and that most of them depend on good auditory skills.  In the ear are the two systems that control reading skills: the vestibular system which controls the movement of the eyes for reading, and the cochlear or auditory system, which process all the sounds, including language.  The phonemic or phonological awareness, the sequential auditory patterns and the auditory conceptualizations of sounds were not completely integrated in him, it was then, that John remembered how his son seems to be hypersensitive to sounds avoiding loud places, frequently asks to turn down the volume of the TV and radio.
