Going up for success The story of Skyler
John was somehow desperate to know that his 11 year old son Skyler was intelligent and able to do well at school, if it would no be for a long obstacle.  He had a significant reading problem.  Looking for help, he traveled all the way from Moca to San Juan, to Tomatis de Puerto Rico and at first, could not believe what was told to him.  That his son reading problem was not related to the eyes, but to the ears.  They explained that the pre-reading skills were not adequate in Skyler and that most of them depend on good auditory skills.  In the ear are the two systems that control reading skills: the vestibular system which controls the movement of the eyes for reading, and the cochlear or auditory system, which process all the sounds, including language.  The phonemic or phonological awareness, the sequential auditory patterns and the auditory conceptualizations of sounds were not completely integrated in him, it was then, that John remembered how his son seems to be hypersensitive to sounds avoiding loud places, frequently asks to turn down the volume of the TV and radio.   He can be easily distracted by noises and complained about headaches after school.  John was surprised to realize the importance that the ear has for reading skills, of corse having those difficulties in reading, his skills were below his grade.

The Tomatis Method with the Linda Mood-Bell program was recommended for Skyler.  The Tomatis is auditory stimulation program that uses Mozart music modified and filtered by the most advanced technology called the Audio-Pro.  The Linda Mood-Bell program starts with most elemental phase of reading, the auditory conceptualization of sounds up to the most advanced skills reading comprehension.

Four months after starting the Tomatis method with the Linda Mood-Bell program, John said: “Before Tomatis, Skyler was reading three to four grades below his 6th grade level, he was shy and embarrassed about his problem… he was close to becoming discouraged and give up trying to read.  After the Tomatis Method his interest and desire to read started to increase immediately” Skyler is reading now and his teaches are surprised with such a big change in such a short time.  His confidence has increased and now volunteers to read out loud in class” so shares John.

There are so many kids like Skyler today in our school, struggling to learn to read, taking hours of tutoring and therapies without seeing an end, a light at the end of the darkness.  Skyler story is evidence that there is hope for them.
